How to Find and Cancel Subscriptions You Forgot About
A 20-minute audit that usually finds two or three live payments nobody remembers starting.
Short answer: Search twelve months of bank and card statements for recurring amounts, then check your app-store and PayPal subscription lists separately — those never appear as named merchants on a statement. Cancel at the source rather than by blocking the card, or you will end up in collections for a contract that is still live.
Annual renewals are the ones that survive audits, because a single charge each July never looks like a pattern in a monthly review. Search a full year, not a quarter.
Where to look
- Bank and card statements for twelve months; sort by amount to make repeats obvious.
- App Store subscriptions and Google Play subscriptions — both hold billing you cannot see elsewhere.
- PayPal automatic payments, which are a separate list from your card.
- Your email inbox for 'receipt', 'renewal', 'your subscription' and 'trial ends'.
- Any card you replaced recently; some merchants follow the new number automatically.
Decide with one question each
| Verdict | Test | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Keep | Used in the last month | Leave it, note the renewal date |
| Pause | Seasonal or occasional | Cancel now, resubscribe when needed |
| Cancel | Cannot remember signing up | Cancel at source and confirm by email |
| Dispute | Never signed up at all | Contact the bank as an unauthorised recurring payment |
Stopping the next one
Use a virtual card with a spending limit for trials where your bank supports it, and always cancel a trial the day you start it — access almost always continues until the end of the period. If a service makes cancellation hard to find, that is information about the service.

Frequently asked questions
- Can I just cancel my card?
- It stops the payment but not the contract, and some merchants can follow a reissued card. Cancel with the provider and keep the confirmation.
- Do I get a refund for an unused year?
- Sometimes, if you ask quickly after renewal and explain you did not intend to renew. Many providers will refund a recent annual charge once as goodwill.
- How often should I audit?
- Once a year is enough if you log renewal dates as you go. Do it in the same month each year so nothing annual slips past twice.
