Is a Cheap Flight With a Long Layover Worth It?
Work out the real hourly value of the saving before you book an eleven-hour connection.
Short answer: Divide the money saved by the extra hours the itinerary costs you, then subtract airport food, any lounge or day-room fee, and the value of a missed connection. If the result is below roughly 8 per hour, take the shorter flight — and always check whether the two legs are on one ticket.

Five per hour is below most people's threshold for sitting in a terminal, which is why the headline saving is misleading. The picture flips when the layover is long enough to leave the airport in a city you wanted to see anyway.
The risk that costs the most
One ticket means the airline rebooks you when the first leg is late. Two separate tickets mean a missed connection is your problem and your expense. Self-transfer bookings sold as a single price are often two tickets in practice — check the confirmation for two booking references.
- Under 90 minutes on separate tickets: too tight, almost anywhere.
- Three to five hours: safe but dull; budget for a meal.
- Eight hours or more: only worth it with lounge access, a day room, or a city worth entering.
- Overnight in the terminal: count a hotel you did not book as a cost, not a saving.
